SYRACUSE, Indiana – December 22th, 2008 – “U4 now has SIP Trunking available for immediate use,” said Rich Hays, Marketing Director of U4. “This is the second in a series of VOIP related services U4 is introducing to the market. SIP offers the flexibility demanded in today’s communications. We will be the first to admit that SIP is somewhat of a hard concept to grasp, but think of it as communications crossing land lines, cell phones, and internet connections. It allows you to better control how your voice and data are transmitted from location to location. The clearest statement that can be made is ‘All you need is an internet connection to communicate.’ A brief explanation of SIP follows.”

What is SIP? - SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a de facto VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) standard that describes the basic signals used to initiate, manage, and terminate communications sessions. For the non-technical, a SIP trunk describes the use of an Internet connection as a replacement for traditional telephone circuits receiving incoming calls and allowing the placement of outgoing calls. Local telephone numbers can be called by people anywhere in the world using the Internet and "SIP trunks." SIP trunk is somewhat a misnomer. U4, 5 years of Bazaar Attendance

SYRACUSE, Indiana – December 15, 2007 – December is a busy month. U4 has started December for the last 5 years with the Craft Bazaar at the Middle School, put on by the PTO. It is one of the largest one day Craft Bazaars in the State of Indiana.

“Everyone thought the U4 Booth was the information Booth. I would smile and pointed to the booth kitty corner from ours,” said Rich Hays, Marketing Director for U4. “I am always impressed with the talent on display and the creativeness of everyone involved.” Hays continued, “You have to give the PTO a big hand, they do an incredible job of putting together the Craft Bazaar.”

Ben Plikerd the CEO of U4 has volunteered to handle the music and has not missed the Craft Bazaar since its inception, 15 years ago. “I started as a High School Senior running the music and have been doing it ever since,” said Ben Plikerd. “I started with two cassette decks and a mixing board, now I use an IPod and all the music is programmed ahead of time. It has become much easier.”

U4 Elongated Coin Requested Nationwide

SYRACUSE, Indiana - December 4, 2007 - U4 made an Elongated Coin (EC) for the Elkhart Fair. You can see it here.

It takes 22 tons of pressure to imprint the design of the U4 Logo, dotted border and text within the border. A detailed description of the design is a horizontal elongated coin with text in the dotted border centered above the U4 logo saying “www.whatisu4.com” and centered below the U4 logo is “All Service, One Company, One Bill”. The elongated coin is about one and a half inches wide and three quarters of an inch high.

Rich Hays, the Marketing Director for U4 collects and sells EC. He submitted a note to TEC News, the newsletter for The Elongated Collector www.tecnews.org, that said anyone could get a free EC by sending a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope to “Smash Me A U4EC”, PO Box 514, North Webster IN 46555.

“The letters started to flood the PO Box!!” said Hays. He continued, “We have received requests from Maine to California. It has been really fun sharing this with everyone.”

At the 1894 World Fair, the first EC were introduced. Now they are collected by people all over the world. You most likely have seen these coins before. They are produced in a machine where you put in 50 cents and a penny and you get the penny back smashed.

The machine will be placed at the U4 Store, 200 E Pickwick Dr, Syracuse, IN 46567 after the 1st of the year. Bring your own pennies and roll your own U4EC at the U4 Store. Store hours are Monday through Friday 8 am to 6 pm.

Ben Plikerd Honored as Paul Harris Fellow

SYRACUSE, Indiana – November 29, 2007 – The Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Club celebrated its 60th anniversary with a dinner at Quaker Haven Camp, November 1st 2007 and Ben Plikerd was honored with Paul Harris Fellowship. This recognition goes to those who live a life their fellow Rotarians believe exemplifies the quality of generosity by helping people in need at home and around the world and contributing to world peace and understanding.

Paul Harris Fellow recognition was created in memory of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary as a way to show appreciation for contributions to the Foundation's charitable and educational program. A Paul Harris Fellow is an individual who contributes $1,000 or in whose name that amount is contributed. Every Paul Harris Fellow receives a pin, medallion and a certificate when he or she becomes a Fellow. It has been a practice of many clubs to award Paul Harris Fellowship to select members in appreciation of their service to the club.

teams from the Syracuse Land of Lakes League. The teams Terry Tester,
Jerry Ebey, Garret Stump, Willie Slabach and Ken Plikerd have a
combined bowling experience of 141 years in this sport. Terry Tester
one of the team members has bowled a total of five 300 games. Garret
Stump last bowled a 300 in 2001. Willie Slabach is not only a 300
bowler but he is also the President of the League. Jerry Ebey has

Erin Weybright Receives U4 Laptop Scholarship

U4 Founder Named One of Michiana's 'Forty Under 40'

SYRACUSE, Indiana — June 1st 2007 — Please join U4 in congratulating founder Ben Plikerd on being selected a member of the 'Forty Under 40' Class of 2007.

The Michiana Region Forty Under 40 is a collaborative project involving the regional chambers of commerce, the Young Professionals Network, Elkhart Truth, South Bend Tribune, Bethel College, and a number of major employers. Locally, the award recognizes and honors forty young professionals for their contribution and accomplishments in both their workplace and the community. Ben was chosen from among a pool of nearly 200 nominations.

A luncheon took place on June 1, 2007 at Bethel College where the recipients were formally introduced and honored. In addition, the Elkhart Truth and South Bend Tribune profiled each member of the Class of 2007 for a special Forty Under 40 section published the same day in both newspapers.

At 28, Ben was the youngest in the class where the average age was 36.5 years. The Presenter, when introducing Ben turned to the Class of 2007 and said, “What were you doing at the age of 28? How many of you had started a computer company, a communications company and a realty company?”

Ben said, “After I returned to my seat with the rest of the Class, they gave me a hard time about setting the bar so high.” Ben also shared, “There are a great number of people I need to thank, everyone at U4, Benson Communications and BenRich deserves more recognition then I. U4 Sound Contest

SYRACUSE, Indiana — April 20, 2007 — U4 announced, today, a contest to develop The U4 Sound. “This is a unique opportunity,” said Ben Plikerd, President, “We are looking for an original sound to be used in commercials, as an ‘action completed’ sound, or even a ring tone. The sound could be 30 seconds long, but we are focusing on a sound that is 2 to 3 seconds long.” Rich Hays, Director of Marketing said, “We hesitate to give example because any un-original sound will be discarded, but the sound would be like the Windows start up© sound, the sound NBC closes the News© with or Sprint’s Power Up© sound. Another example of the sound would be what you hear when you turn your cell phone off or on. It is hard to describe what we are looking for in words.” Plikerd added, “With access to today’s technology, I would not be surprised at all to receive submissions from individuals who are considered non-musical. We are expecting the students in local schools to really be creative and original.”

The Contest - The contest is open to anyone and will run from now until June 1st. The creator of the winning sound will receive $1000 per contest rules. SYRACUSE, Indiana— July 28, 2006 Elkhart County Fair — The home and Family Arts building at the Elkhart County Fair hosted the final in-house cooking contest of the week with “Bursting with Blueberries,” a popular category that drew entries from many local residents.
Judging the contest, which included recipes from breads, pies, and desserts were fair board president Cork Wagner, Fair Queen Kendra Ellington, Young Homemaker of the Year Leasa Worley, and sponsor of the contest, U4’s Rich Hays, Director of Marketing.
“We are please to be able to sponsor this contest”, said Hays, “These dishes are all good, and do I have to pick a winner?”
U4 donated three Whetstone Woodenware mixing paddles for the top three winners in the contest that were with “Bursting with Blueberries,” to help commemorate the contest.
Top honors went to Vicki Gibson and her blueberry cobbler.
Wagner was pleased as well. “I am glad you won the paddle, because you just lost your dish.”

Town of Syracuse to save $2545 annually with U4

SYRACUSE, Indiana—June 3rd, 2005—The town of Syracuse decided this past week to switch over local and long distance telephone communication services to U4. The estimated annual savings from local service alone will be approximately $2,000.00 Long distance savings, depending on usage, will be approximately $545 annually. All departments will be making the switch to U4. There will be no downtime or missed calls as the service is switched over to U4.

Many customers still pay a monthly lease fee on telephone equipment that may be 10 or 20 years old because some carriers bill customers with open-ended leases. When customers switch to U4, those open-ended leases are eliminated from the customers' accounts, saving customers even more monthly. This will save the town of Syracuse a significant amount of money. "It made sense for us not only to save money but also to support a local business," stated Town Manager, Jeff Noffsigner.

The town's phone bill will be consolidated into one bill for convenient payment processing. A major benefit to the town having all the accounts and locations on one bill is that the account can be itemized by department. It will no longer be necessary to go through the phone bill line by line, which was very inefficient. Councilman Brian Woody approved switching services to U4. "My business switched to U4 in 2003 and we have saved close to a thousand dollars since then. I believe when it comes to budgeting for next year it will make a difference. Getting one bill for local and long distance will be a huge time savings as well." The first of several purchases will be investing in a switch that is capable of offering telephone calls, video on demand services, wireless internet, and DSL. "Imagine the possibilities that we will be able to bring to Northern Indiana, where the cable TV and telephone carriers can only dream of providing such services. June 10th should be our implementation date of our new switch. As a U4 customer, you will be able to cut the cords to Sprint or Verizon, and move your home telephone number anywhere in the world. Our VOIP (Voice Over IP) product with be available shortly after June, allowing you to take your phone with you as you travel. Wouldn't it be great for snow birds to have one phone number year round? With U4VOIP you can. Do you ever travel for business? Did you ever think about taking your phone with you on business trips? VOIP technology is not available in most Sprint and Verizon territories in Northern Indiana. VOIP allows you to remove the local phone company while you receive your calls over the internet. U4 Doubles Customer Base in Five Months

SYRACUSE, Indiana—November 23rd, 2004—U4 has doubled their customer base in less than five months. When asked about the significant amount of customer gain in the past several months, Ben Plikerd, CEO stated, "We are starting to see customer referrals seven to ten people deep according to our systems. The savings are real, the service is real, and if you call us right now, someone real will answer the phone." U4 currently has over 2000 customers, and their growth for the past several months has been approximately 20 percent per month. U4 is projecting to double its customer base again in the next six months with its expansion to Florida and Ohio. Scott Wenger, CFO attributes the increase in customers to business expos and word of mouth. "Our staff is so well trained and we have so many processes in place that we can handle twice the amount of business with the same staff and provide the same great customer service." U4 has begun research into the wireless market and is hoping to offer this new service by third quarter of 2005.

U4COM begins certification for Florida

SYRACUSE, Indiana—August 17th, 2004—U4COM today announced that they have begun the 90 day process to file in the state of Florida. Florida local telephone access will be provided in those areas served by Sprint, Verizon, and SBC. U4COM long distance and internet access will also be available in those areas. U4 celebrates 1,000th customer

SYRACUSE, Indiana—June 8th, 2004—Scott Wenger, CFO U4COM, shaved his head in celebration of U4COM's 1000th customer last Tuesday. "I started telling my staff around the 200customer mark that I was going to shave my head in celebration when we reached 1000; needless to say my staff wasn't too shocked when I walked in the door after lunch on Tuesday with a shaved head." After only six months of providing service, U4COM, a local telephone company out of Syracuse, Indiana, welcomed their 1,000th customer. "Our employees have done a wonderful job. Their hard work and dedication have accelerated our operations" explained Ben Plikerd, CEO of U4COM. "We expect to have 4,000 customers by December and to be providing service in at least six other states." "We only had one lost parent this year, You look away at a homemade pot holder for just a moment and just like that, a parent is lost in the crowd.
